The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
